Our solar powered pontoon houseboat build had a huge problem… It was slowly sinking!
When we first designed it, we made everything out of wood, because at the time, it was pretty cheap. As we kept building, the weight kept adding. We realized this and decided that we could lift it back out of the water with 2 more pontoons.
The added pontoons would turn our solar powered boat into a quadtoon that was going to be 12 feet wide! The 2 extra feet on each side would allow us to walk around the entire boat on the outside of the boat’s cabin. This was great because as we get into our missions, we need access to all sides.
Before the upgrade, our solar boat was sitting about 18 inches deep in the water. Once we added the 2 extra pontoons, we were only sitting about 8 inches deep. It was a HUGE improvement!
Our DIY homemade houseboat is the perfect escape from the cold Michigan winters, and we can drive around the river pretty good no, with our added pontoons and new electric outboard motor!
